A Prompt Defines the Work

A useful prompt is a working agreement between you and an AI tool. It states the task, supplies the context the tool may use, defines the audience and output, and sets boundaries. The goal is not to sound technical. The goal is to reduce ambiguity so you can evaluate whether the response meets a clear standard.

Vague Request vs. Clear Agreement

Vague: “Write an update.”

Clear: “Draft a 120-word project update for department leaders. Summarize the completed migration, identify the delayed vendor review as the main blocker, and end with the decision needed by Friday. Use a direct, professional tone. Do not invent dates or metrics.”

The second prompt establishes a task, audience, content, format, tone, and accuracy boundary.
